Curiosities: What is that stone structure on Wydown?

clayton-curiosities-wydown You may wonder what the stone structure is at the corner of Wydown Boulevard and Carrswold Drive. It is a remnant of days gone by, from the eve of public transportation in the greater St. Louis area. Beautifully built to suit the up and coming elegant new neighborhoods in St. Louis County, this structure and similar ones, were refuge for people waiting on the next streetcar, and later, bus. The streetcar line on Wydown was removed and the boulevard renovated in the late 1940s and early 1950s, creating one of the loveliest drives in America.

See news articles below on the transition of Wydown's streetcar line.
