Curiosities: Clayton Time Capsule

clayton-curiosities-wydown The year 2013 marked the centennial of Clayton's formal incorporation, and as such a celebration was in order.

Hoping to serve as a link from years past to years to come, the Hanley Time Capsule was buried for exhumation in 2063. Galas and ceremonies were held for its interment, and in the capsule was included various photos, a history book, and a few essays written by students speculating on life in the year 2113 (brain to brain communication, flying neighborhoods that would not be out of place on the Jetsons, and the ever-popular hovercraft were among their predictions).

The letter included in the capsule, written by Mayor Harold Sanger reads as follows:

"We, the leaders and citizens of Clayton in 2013, wish you the very best as you celebrate Clayton's 150th anniversary. May the spirit of Ralph Clayton and Martin Hanley inspire generations of Claytonians to continue the effort that made our city the unique and wonderful community it is. We hope you will continue this tradition and pass along the contents of this capsule with information about the events that are unfolding in 2063 to those who will celebrate Clayton's 200th birthday in 2113."
